This is one of the oldest pockets on the North Shore, a leafy, village-feel suburb known for its restored Federation cottages and a tight community feel that's held on despite the growth around it.

Small Federation-era cottages, detached and semi-detached, went up here in timber and brick between the 1880s and 1910s. Townhouses and infill development have filled in the gaps since, but the old cottage stock along streets like Willoughby Road and Central Street still sets the character.

Slade Street, Wilson Street and Garland Road carry more of the same, with weatherboard sitting next to double-brick block by block. It's a genuinely mixed streetscape, not a single uniform era.

Properties on the lower streets, closer to the gully, tend to notice it first. Higher ground further from the creek line generally copes better with the same storm.
